The importance of high definition photographic makeup
At our studio we primarily use KRYOLAN Professional Makeup products. They are of the highest quality and are specifically designed for HD (high definition) professional photography, film and television.
To prepare the skin, we use beautiful HD micro primers to soften the skin, reduce pores and fine lines for both masculine and feminine clients. As our cameras are so sharp, this gives and editorial, polished finish to the images.
We use Micronised Foundations with exceptional light reflection qualities created for highly professional makeup, ideally suitable for high resolution camera techniques. Our favourite, the Digital Complexion Fluid Foundation, specifically created for HD photography and video, contains hydrating ingredients for flawless silky skin that is true to tone. Skin compatibility ranges from the very fairest to darkest skin tone, is dermatologically approved and vegan. We can blend our foundations to match any skin tone. Kyrolan has 800 skin tone colours.
Most people don't realise that they may require 2-3 different foundation tones to achieve a balanced complexion. The thickness of the makeup also can make a big difference, which is why we stock a mix of fluid and cream foundations. What works for one age group, may not for another, so experienced Makeup Artistry is very important.

The essential key makeup skills in photography
Just because we have access to a wide range of products, doesn't mean it should all go on your face. We tailor each makeup look to suit you and your comfort. If you really only want a minimal look, then that's what we do. If you want a beautiful smokey eye, then sure! - we'd love to create it. You have control throughout the whole experience.
We consider using some or all of the following techniques when creating a flawless complexion:
-
HD PRIMER
The first step is skin prep using HD Primer to soften the skin, reduce pores and fine lines - this is essential in high resolution photography.
-
FOUNDATION
Kryolan HD Foundation, 2-3 colours are applied generally to even out complexions.
-
HIGHLIGHTER
Highlighter is used with caution in photography as you could look sweaty. Minimal application around the cheekbones and inner eyes can look beautiful and youthful.
-
CONCEALER
Concealer is great for discolouration, blemishes, under eye bags and pigmentation.
-
CONTOURING
Contouring is advanced makeup artistry. Our makeup artists know how to do this with 2-3 shades from your natural skin tone and make the results look flawless!
-
CHEEKS & LIP COLOURS
Blush, lipstick or lip gloss are discussed and applied to your comfort and colour tone. Some clients love to try a pop of colour or keep it natural to a gloss. The choice is yours.
-
BRONZING
Looking suntaned can mean different things to different cultures. In some cultures whitening products are used. Using makeup to bronze you is a personal beauty choice. If you are applying fake tan, please ensure it is a purple or grey based tan. Orange tones can react badly in photography and look yellow and age the skin. More on this in our styling guide when you book.
-
EYE SHADOW & MASCARA
Eye shadow and mascara can enhance and harmonise natural eye colour. For example, neutral tones suit most clients eyes and can be worn by all eye colours. Blue, green, brown and hazel eyes all have colour charts that complement and really make the eyes pop. Metallics, especially in natural tones are highly reflective and subtle application can make a little go a long way.
-
EYEBROWS
Eyebrow detailing really makes a difference in photography depending on the lighting techniques used. You want to make sure you can see your brows, especially in studio photography. When men have their eyebrows brushed for the first time, it's really nice to see them enjoy how something so simple makes their eyes stand out and gives them a polished look.
-
LASHES
Individual false lashes are available and one of the makeup items our clients absolutely love. Individual lashes can be added to the makeup look to bring out the eyes. They look natural when applied to the tip of the eye, to sculpt the eye out or up. Of course, if you prefer the look of high-impact lashes then simply let us know.
We are a CovidSafe business and always abide by the strictest hygiene standards. Alise and Treia always make sure the studio is beautifully presented - with a day spa vibe!
